The state of Puebla may look small on the map, but within it there are two volcanoes, the most voluminous pyramid on the planet, and more than ten Pueblos Mágicos. The journey begins two hours by car from Mexico City.
Your list of what to see in Puebla starts in the capital, with a historic center that has been a World Heritage Site since 1987: façades covered in talavera, the blue-and-white glazed ceramic that made the city famous, and the Chapel of the Rosary, Baroque and covered in gold. At the table, mole poblano awaits you, a thick chili and chocolate sauce that is cooked for hours in a clay pot. And always, at the end of the street, the smoking silhouette of the Popocatépetl volcano.
Outside the capital, the Pueblos Mágicos mark the route: Cholula and its pyramid hidden beneath a hill, Atlixco among flower-filled courtyards, Cuetzalan with the mist hanging over the coffee plantations of the Sierra Norte, Zacatlán and its apples. To the south, the Tehuacán Valley rises with the densest cactus forests in the world.
On the outskirts of Puebla you will see a hill with a yellow church at the top. Beneath the ground is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the most voluminous construction on the planet: 4.5 million cubic meters, almost twice as much as the Pyramid of Giza.
